Why water? We all know that water is SO important and that we should be drinking a ton of it, but why? Staying well-hydrated will do all of this for your body:
- Improve your liver, hormones and metabolism
- Help carry and distribute nutrients throughout the body
- Help maintain blood volume
- Regulate body temperature
This is why you are healthier when you are continually drinking water throughout the day! Essentially, water is to our bodies what oil is to a car.
Next, how much water should you be consuming?
- Sedentary women should consume 72 ounces
- Sedentary men 84 ounces of water per day
- Those participating in a weight loss program should drink an additional 8 ounces of water for every 25 lbs they carry above their ideal weight
- Add an additional 6-12 ounces of water for every 15-20 minutes of exercise
- If exercise exceeds 60 minutes, use a sports drink or supplement to replace fluid and muscle glycogen stores.
With all this to be said, I understand how easy it is to forget to drink this much water so here are my best tips on making sure you get enough fluids throughout the day:
- Start your day with 8-16 oz of water (upon waking)
- Carry water with you
- Invest in a large measured water bottle
- Set a reminder on your phone
- rink a glass of water before every meal
- Drink before and after exercise.
- Order water when eating out
- Fill you fridge with water bottles
- Drink through a straw (we tend to drink more that way)
- Contribute to your daily water intake by drinking herbal tea, infused water, coconut water, carbonated water and even….coffee!
