We are continuing the series ‘This is 40’ with some honest conversation about how things may have changed over the years when it comes to lifestyle and some tips on how to manage these areas of life!
YOU WORKOUT DIFFERENTLY
It’s a really full season of life with multiple competing priorities - family, marriage & kids being at the top of that list with LOTS of extracurricular activities. Being fully present for and investing in our kids before they leave home is important. Investing time and energy in staying connected with my dear husband so we don’t end up strangers with an empty nest is important. Building my business and investing in my career is important. My friends and church community are important. My health and wellness are important. But both time and energy are limited as are hours in the day. As a fitness professional and coach, I also know the importance of consistency over time - so my workouts in this season are shorter and efficient - 30-45 minutes max with a combo of cardio and strength training. I love to run, but I typically only find one day a week most weeks for a longer run. I have also learned the importance of working in a day or two of yoga - slowing down, working on stretching, breathing and releasing stress and tension from my body. All of these components are a part of the Stronger Together Online Community - a variety of effective workouts with an incredibly encouraging community to enjoy the journey with. If you’re struggling to get your workouts in, we’d love for you to join us!
YOU EAT DIFFERENTLY
For all of the competing priorities and demands listed above, my body needs fuel that will not only sustain me, but also keep me energized and strong. I’ve learned how to get the nutrients my body needs and craves through plenty of protein, veggies, fruits & whole grains. I’ve learned to plan ahead so I don’t self-sabotage and I've learned to listen to my body and enjoy food with freedom & balance.. My 6-week nutrition course breaks this down week-by-week by teaching you to incorporate small adjustments to your diet that make a huge difference in the long run! It all starts with taking the initiative to educate & equip yourself with all the tools you need to be successful - sure you’ll lose the weight, but you’ll gain so much more.
YOU REST DIFFERENTLY
Slowing down and relaxing is so important for our bodies at any age. We NEED to rest to function properly. We need both quality sleep and intentional down time. Rest looks like taking a bath, reading a book, watching a movie, taking a walk, journaling...doing anything that relieves stress both physically and mentally. At 40, I think I’ve finally learned that I can’t go a million miles an hour for very long - so I’m learning to pace myself by embracing & incorporating rest by choice instead of being forced by pushing too hard and shutting down.
YOU COMMUNICATE DIFFERENTLY
With age comes a degree of wisdom in knowing when to speak and when to listen. I’m getting better at boundaries. I’m learning how to speak more kindly to myself. I’m also learning the importance of sharing my heart and initiating hard conversations. WIth age also comes a degree of courage to more boldly speak the truth and stick up for what we believe in - along with a better idea of our passions and areas of God-given influence. God gives us a voice to lift others up & for His glory.
“Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4
