Struggling to stay cool (and collected) this summer? You’re not alone! With the kids home from school, the constant balancing act, and the temperatures climbing, it’s about time we take action and cool down (literally and figuratively)! As a certified nutritionist and personal trainer, I’ve compiled a list of things that are essential for staying healthy and sane this summer rather than depleted and heat zapped!
1. HYDRATE! Water, water and more water. It’s way too easy to become dehydrated in 90+ degree weather. You’re busy balancing all the plates and potentially dehydrated before you even know it. Consider adding an electrolyte supplement to your water bottle to help keep you hydrated throughout the day. A few of my favorites are NUUN tabs, Re-Lyte and Body Armour Lyte.
2. Eat In-Season Fruits & Veggies. Head to your local farmers market each week this summer and stock up onlocal, in-season fruits and vegetables to keep you fueled with essential nutrients. Adding water-based, nutrient dense fruits & veggies can have you feeling refreshed in no time! Think watermelon, cucumber, peaches, tomatoes, and more! Check out the summer produce in you’re area HERE.
3. Stay in the Shade! Avoid peak U.V. sun hours (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and seek shade as much as possible. A few ways to seek out shade would include finding a shaded trail to walk, a breezy covered pavilion for your workout, an umbrella by the pool, and a hat on your head! And as always, wear your sunscreen for optimal skin protection! Whether you have plans to be outside or not, make it a routine to put sunscreen on your face every morning.
4. Other Tools to Stay Cool. Be sure to wear loose fitting, light weight clothing and wear sandals or flip flops whenever possible - FYI: feet release heat. A lightweight large brim hat will shade your face and upper body from the sun, too. Also, using a cold damp cloth, ice cubes, ice pack or cold water bottle on pulse points like your wrists, neck, knees & elbows can quickly cool you down if you get too hot.
5. Workout Indoors. I have ton of FREE workouts on Instagram and Youtube. These are all short virtual workouts that give you an insight into what my online membership community receives each week.
Some of these things might come naturally, but some take some planning and intention. Be smart about your summer activities and take proactive steps to make sure you and the kids are staying cool this summer! For more health and lifestyle tips, follow me on Instagram at @cassidymanningcomplete.
